Bolt and StackAlchemist are the closest comparison in the "prompt to app" category, so this one deserves a real answer. Both of us generate working code from a prompt. We make very different trade-offs. Here is the honest breakdown.

Where Bolt wins, honestly
The iteration loop is the best I have used. You prompt, the app re-renders in the browser, you prompt again. No local setup, no dev server, no install step. For rapid experimentation with ideas, Bolt is unmatched. If I am brainstorming a small JS app, I open Bolt.
Speed to first working preview. Bolt returns a working preview in under a minute for small apps. StackAlchemist takes about 12 minutes — because we run a full build before releasing the artifact. For prototyping, Bolt's speed is the right trade. For shipping, it is not.
In-browser IDE. No install, no local environment. That is a real UX win for users who do not want to configure anything.
Great for demos. If you need to show a client "here's what a version of your idea might feel like", Bolt is the fastest way to get there.
Where StackAlchemist is the right call
Your app needs a real backend. Bolt runs inside WebContainers — a Node-only sandbox. It cannot run .NET, Python, Go, or anything that is not JavaScript. If your SaaS needs a typed API with EF Core, background workers, or a real compilation step, you are out of scope for Bolt. StackAlchemist generates a .NET 10 API that runs anywhere a server runs.
Your output needs to compile. Bolt is aggressively optimized for speed of feedback. That means it returns apps that boot and show something — whether they fully compile cleanly as a production bundle is not the goal. StackAlchemist runs dotnet build and pnpm build as a gate before release. You never see a broken download.
You need to deploy to your own infrastructure. Bolt's output runs in WebContainers, which is Bolt's thing. Exporting and self-hosting is possible but is a conversion step. StackAlchemist ships a repo with a Dockerfile and docker-compose on day one — docker compose up and you're running locally. Deploy to AWS, Fly, your VPS, whatever. No conversion needed.
You want to buy the code, not rent the tool. Bolt is a subscription — you pay monthly for access. StackAlchemist is one-time per generation. When we're done you have the code, I have my fee, we do not have an ongoing relationship.
Auth, payments, and database are wired by default. StackAlchemist ships with Supabase auth, Stripe billing, PostgreSQL migrations, and CI/CD all configured. Bolt can generate some of this; the depth and opinionation is different.
The real question: are you prototyping or shipping?
This is the honest dividing line.
If you are prototyping — validating an idea, running a demo, exploring a concept, testing with a friend — use Bolt. The iteration speed is worth the limits. You will throw this code away anyway.
If you are shipping — this is a real SaaS, customers will pay, the code will live for months or years — use StackAlchemist. You want the backend to be real, the build to be verified, the ownership to be yours, the pricing to be per-artifact rather than per-month.
I use both. They are not the same product. The confusion arises because both start with "type a prompt, get an app" and then diverge sharply in what happens after.
A tangible example
Say the prompt is: "Build a subscription management dashboard for gyms."
On Bolt: you'll have a working Node-based app running in the browser in about 2 minutes. UI, some in-memory data, a rough flow you can click through. Good for a demo to a gym owner. To actually deploy it, you export, wire a real database, set up auth, configure Stripe, and migrate off WebContainers — several days of work.
On StackAlchemist: 12 minutes and you have a downloadable repo. .NET 10 API, Next.js 15 frontend, Postgres migrations, Supabase auth, Stripe billing — all wired. docker compose up and it's running. Deploy to your cloud of choice. Hours of work, not days.
For validation: Bolt wins on speed. For shipping: StackAlchemist wins on depth.
When NOT to choose StackAlchemist
- You are ideating and expect to discard the code. Use Bolt.
- You need feedback within seconds, not minutes. Use Bolt.
- Your app is pure JavaScript and does not need a real backend. Use Bolt.
When NOT to choose Bolt
- You need a typed backend with EF Core or any non-Node runtime.
- You need the output to deploy to your own infra without a conversion step.
- You need auth, payments, and database already wired on day one.
- You prefer owning a repo over renting access to a tool.
Verdict
Bolt and StackAlchemist are on the same spectrum — prompt in, app out — but at different ends of it. Bolt optimizes for iteration speed and in-browser experience. We optimize for verified, owned, production-shaped full-stack output.
